RealCarCost — Know what your car really costs

PCP Settlement & Equity Calculator

If you're thinking about changing your car before a PCP agreement ends, the first question is simple: is the car worth more or less than it would cost to settle? This works out your equity position and lays out your options in plain English — without pushing you toward any one of them.

Positive equity (estimate)

Your estimated settlement figure is approximately 7.1% below the car's estimated value.
Only your finance provider can confirm your exact settlement figure. The amount above is an estimate for planning — if you have a real quotation, switch on "I have my lender's settlement figure" and enter it instead.

In plain English

The car is currently worth more than it would cost to settle — you have £1,166 of equity that could go toward a deposit on a replacement, or toward clearing the agreement outright.

This position isn't fixed. It changes over time because both sides move — your outstanding settlement balance falls as you make payments, while the car's market value changes independently (typically falling as it ages). Continuing to pay doesn't guarantee more equity; it depends on how those two figures move relative to each other.

Possible next steps

  • Keep paying — if the agreement still suits you, there's no requirement to change anything now.
  • Request your exact settlement figure — from your finance provider. This estimate is for planning only; only they can confirm the real number.
  • Sell or part-exchange — possible even with finance outstanding, but any shortfall or surplus is settled with the lender first.
  • Compare replacement options — see what a new agreement would actually cost using our other calculators before deciding.

Estimated figures are for planning purposes only. Your finance provider's settlement quotation is the only authoritative figure — this tool does not have access to your actual agreement.

Methodology

Where you don't have a lender settlement figure, the estimate uses the same reducing-balance annuity method as our PCP calculator to project the outstanding balance at your current payment number. This is the standard method most UK PCP agreements are structured on, but your lender's actual figure can differ due to fees, payment-timing conventions, or early-settlement rebates — we never present this estimate as an official figure.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the exact amount my finance company will ask for?

No. Only your lender can give you the exact settlement figure, since it depends on their specific calculation method, any fees, and the precise payment date. If you have an actual settlement quotation, enter it directly instead of using the estimate — it always takes priority.

What's the difference between this and the Negative Equity calculator?

Both use the same settlement maths. This tool is built around the decision of what to do next — plain-English equity position, remaining payments, and neutral next steps. The Negative Equity calculator focuses specifically on the extra cost of rolling a shortfall into a new financed deal.

Can I sell or part-exchange a car that's still on finance?

Yes — it's common. The dealer or buyer's payment first settles the outstanding finance with your lender, and you receive (or owe) the difference. If you're in negative equity, you'll usually need to cover the shortfall yourself before the sale can complete.
